A celebration of our evolution and achievements over the last decade, Rewilding Europe’s latest Annual Review is also fresh and forward-looking. With interest in rewilding at an all-time high, we are ready to take rewilding to the next level, together with all those joining the movement!

Peatland rewilding can mitigate climate change and benefit people and nature in myriad other ways. A new grant from the US-based Grantham Foundation will see Rewilding Europe work to fund landscape-scale peatland rewilding through the sale of nature-based carbon credits.

Four Apennine chamois were released into the Sirente Velino Regional Park in mid-May. This will enhance the existing free-roaming population and boost efforts to secure a long-term future for this iconic species.

Last week, a male lynx – nicknamed ‘Ljubo’ – was released into the Velebit Mountains Rewilding landscape. Ljubo is the fifth lynx to be released in Croatia as part of the European LIFE Lynx project.

Cinereous vultures – Europe’s largest and heaviest raptor – have been brought back to Southern Bulgaria, with 17 birds from Spain having been transported all the way to the rewilding landscape of the Rhodope Mountains.

The 400,000-dollar grant will fund key activities in the Affric Highland rewilding landscape and support development of a new financial tool to boost rewilding.

A newly established rewilding site in northern Portugal, known as Ermo das Águias (‘wilderness of the eagles’), is providing an opportunity to improve landscape connectivity and promote the regeneration of native vegetation and enhance the benefits of natural grazing.

Coordinated by Rewilding Europe, 12 partners from Italy and Greece are kicking off a new EU-funded programme that will support living harmoniously with bears in Europe. The LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors initiative will support the development of a network of communities in coexistence corridors.

Natural grazing by wild and semi-wild herbivores provides a wide range of benefits to both nature and people. A training session held in March will support its scaling up in Rewilding Europe’s operational landscapes.

Thanks to a partnership with global law firm Hogan Lovells, a new series of short films showcasing the work of Rewilding Europe will begin production this spring. By demonstrating the beneficial impact of our rewilding efforts, this exciting series will boost outreach and help to scale up rewilding.
