Rewilding Europe and US-based The WILD Foundation have extended their partnership agreement by signing a “Collaborative Conservation Agreement” for 2014–2015.

The vision of how Europe can be rewilded showing some of the latest insights, experiences and successful working examples is presented in the brochure “Making Europe a Wilder Place, a series of presentations of the forefront of rewilding in Europe”. This 34-page brochure is now available. The proceedings are the result of a full-day seminar organised by Rewilding Europe on October 9, 2013 at WILD10, the World Wilderness Congress in Salamanca, Spain.

Silent, motionless, perched on a ledge at Las Batuecas, intent on capturing nuances of ancient lines that depict the might and manner of wild goats, I gain awareness of a large bird, voicing its coarse, high-pitched song in peaceful interludes from the trees behind me.

Rewilding Europe is among the 10 leading international conservation organisations that endorsed “The Statement from Salamanca”, one of the two major policy initiatives of the 10th World Wilderness Congress (WILD10). This statement shows a strong commitment of the organisations to collaboration and practical, positive actions to make the world a wilder place.

At the time of the previous World Wilderness Congress in 2009, I was quite busy becoming an ecologist in the lecture rooms of the VU University in Amsterdam. Just four years later I find myself sitting amongst great colleagues in a huge conference hall in Salamanca, listening to the closing remarks of what has been the 10^th edition of this Congress, the world’s longest-running international conservation event. And what an inspiring experience it has been! Let me just make a little trip down memory lane about how wonderful WILD10 really was.

Rewilding Europe was visually very present and thoroughly presented during WILD10, the World Wilderness Congress in Salamanca, Spain, 4–10 October. WILD10 was an unforgettable week of happenings, media attention, world-class speakers, meetings and intense discussions, for example about the concept of rewilding, both in a global and in a European setting.

Environment leaders have launched a new “Vision for a Wilder Europe” at Wild10, the world wilderness congress in Salamanca, Spain. Nine organisations from across Europe have promoted the Vision that seeks to build on the significant conservation achievements in Europe that have seen the comeback of some of our most iconic wild species such as the wolf, bear, sea eagle, salmon and beaver.

The Central Apennines (Italy) was announced as the sixth area within Rewilding Europe today during WILD 10, the World Wilderness Congress in Salamanca, Spain (4–10 October). The Central Apennines, known as “the Wild Heart of Italy” is a perfect example of a rewilding area that is very close to a big city. This the newest of our rewilding areas is only an hour and a half’s drive from Rome.
