Immediate action at scale is needed to restore nature across Europe. Spearheaded by the Nature Restoration Law, the enabling environment for rewilding has never been stronger — although meaningful implementation by EU Member States is now critical.

Rewilding Europe has signed a major financial partnership with the Ecological Restoration Fund. The funding will support and scale up practical rewilding and enhance the work of the European Wildlife Comeback Fund, thereby helping to realise the ambitions set out in our “Strategy 2030”.

During a recent visit to the Danube Delta, Frans Schepers – CEO of Rewilding Europe – witnessed the resilience of nature and people. Reflecting on his visit, he urgently calls upon our governments and representatives in Brussels to prioritise the enactment of the EU Nature Restoration Law. Immediate action is needed to harness the transformative power of rewilding and secure a better future.

Restoring the health and functionality of wild nature offers us a game-changing opportunity to address our biodiversity and climate emergencies at the same time. The UN’s biodiversity and climate-related plans and agreements should reflect this by working synergistically to maximise support for rewilding.

The NaturaConnect initiative, which includes Rewilding Europe in a 22-member partnership, will help to create the Trans-European Nature Network. This well-connected system of natural areas will enhance biodiversity, climate change resilience, and the benefits nature delivers to Europeans.

The UN Decade on Ecological Restoration aims to catalyse nature recovery efforts around the world. Two of Rewilding Europe’s rewilding landscapes are playing a supporting role through their involvement in restoration “flagship” initiatives.

Both Rewilding Europe and the rewilding movement have come a long way since 2011. With Rewilding Europe’s tenth anniversary celebrations kicking off on June 29, now is the time to reflect on progress and look to the future.
