A keystone species in freshwater ecosystems, the white-clawed crayfish is in decline across much of Europe. The opening of a second crayfish breeding centre in Italy’s Central Apennines will enhance reintroduction efforts by the local rewilding team and contribute to the wider restoration of rivers in the landscape.
Rewilding Europe has just moved to a new head office on the outskirts of Nijmegen, which has fittingly been named “Wild Quarters”. Surrounded by nature, this new and inspiring space is the start of a new chapter for Rewilding Europe, positioning us well to accelerate the scaling up of rewilding across Europe.
Natural grazing can deliver multiple benefits for nature, climate and people. An event in the Greater Côa Valley rewilding landscape in Portugal at the end of May, which brought together a wide range of experts and young rewilders, helped participants to share knowledge and expertise, with the aim of scaling up this essential natural process in Europe.
Over 100 participants from Italy and beyond came together to discuss rewilding-related topics at a three-day seminar in the Central Apennines last week. The event helped the local rewilding team raise awareness of rewilding and its positive impacts, and to establish and strengthen relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
A new rewilding centre has opened on the German side of the Oder Delta rewilding landscape. As nature continues to recover in the area, the multi-functional building will help to build engagement, develop nature-based tourism, and ultimately enhance rewilding impact.
“A New Path for the Velebit Mountains”, an enthralling 15-minute documentary by Emmanuel Rondeau, tells the story of rewilding in this beautiful part of Croatia. At the end of March, a premiere in the local town of Gospić drew a large and diverse audience.
A well-attended rewilding symposium was held at Wageningen University in the Netherlands on September 29. The event’s diverse programme was capped by the formal inauguration of Europe’s first professor of rewilding ecology.
The symposium, which helped promote rewilding in both a European and Portuguese context, featured a range of presentations from rewilding thought leaders. It has so far attracted over 2000 online views.
