Rewilding can deliver game-changing benefits for people and nature, but only if it is scaled up dramatically. Continued financial support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery is critical to Rewilding Europe’s upscaling efforts.
Amplifying the benefits of rewilding
Unrestricted funding from the Dutch Postcode Lottery, which has supported Rewilding Europe since 2011, has been instrumental to the growth and impact of our initiative, and pays testament to the success of our rewilding efforts. The lottery committed to support Rewilding Europe for another five years in 2021, contributing 900,000 euros annually.
Today there has never been a greater need to scale up rewilding. As the efforts of Rewilding Europe and other rewilding initiatives are showing, allowing nature to recover breathes new life into landscapes and generates a whole range of positive impacts, with healthier, more functional ecosystems and thriving wildlife populations helping to deliver benefits such as cleaner air, fresher water, enhanced carbon uptake and storage, and more sustainable jobs, income and economies.
“In 2022, Rewilding Europe launched “Strategy 2030“, an ambitious plan to advance and scale up rewilding through till 2030,” says Rewilding Europe’s Executive Director Frans Schepers. “The support of the Postcode Lottery is essential as we work towards making Europe a wilder place.”
For people and nature
Every year millions of euros in charitable donations are made possible by the 3 million people who participate in the Dutch Postcode Lottery (a minimum of 40% of every ticket goes to charity). The lottery, which has been raising funds since 1989 to support organisations working towards a fairer and greener world, is now the biggest charity lottery in the Netherlands. It has now disbursed over 7.6 billion euros to beneficiaries since foundation.
Rewilding Europe is extremely grateful to the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and all its participants, for their longstanding and highly valued support, which is helping to make Europe wild again.
