Working in Lapland’s great and wild outdoors shaped Håkan’s life for over 20 years. In 1994, he pioneered the concept of ecotourism in the region by launching his own company that he ran for 12 years, establishing contacts and building invaluable relationships along the way. Throughout this entire time, he kept it as a small-scale, down-to-earth initiative rooted in the local community, an ethos that he continues to hold dearly today.

People behind Rewilding Europe: Deli Saavedra, Regional Manager

Being one of two Regional Managers for Rewilding Europe, Deli is a key figure in making rewilding a reality in five areas stretching from Portugal all the way to Bulgaria on Europe’s eastern fringe. As the main point of liaison between the central office and local teams across the continent, it is his job to ensure that rewilding manifests itself as real action on the ground, and that local communities are going to be better off as a result.

When Davor Krmpotić joined Rewilding Europe as the Velebit team leader, he not only committed to rewilding an incredibly biodiverse mountain range, but to rewilding his own professional life as well. At the time, he was working with the Croatian government body responsible for managing the country’s forests. The job promised stability and a clear career path, but Davor soon found that the majority of his time was spent sitting at a desk reviewing documents, a working routine he found neither exciting nor challenging.

Team Leader Profiles – Ulrich Stöcker, Oder Delta (Germany)

Ulrich’s journey towards becoming the Team Leader of the Oder Delta German team began in the legal realm. As a lawyer specialized in Environmental Law, he was directly involved in the set-up of the Lower Oder Valley National Park. During his work, he has experienced resistance of local residents to new legislation if they felt excluded from the process; an experience that has strongly shaped his views on conservation and community involvement.
