The ongoing LIFE Vultures Project in Bulgaria and Greece has seen a number of black vultures tagged with GPS transmitters. Last year these showed one particular bird making a remarkable journey.

Taking place at the end of February, this year’s first European Rewilding Network (ERN) webinar saw 17 participants from nine European countries come together online to discuss the challenges of introducing large herbivores.

Memorandums of cooperation signed with two parks adjacent to the Velebit rewilding area will strengthen and deepen collaboration on wild nature conservation and the ongoing development of a local nature-based economy.

Reintroduced as part of the LIFE Vultures project, the seven animals will hopefully complete the creation of a stable red deer population in the area. This population will provide an important food source for local scavengers and predators, as well as boosting biodiversity through their grazing.

At the Annual Charity Gala of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, held at Amsterdam’s Carré Theatre on February 15, Rewilding Europe received a 500,000 euro donation towards its rewilding work across Europe.

The innovative rewilding efforts of the LIFE+OZON project, a member of the European Rewilding Network, are already benefitting biodiversity in the Sonian Forest, located just outside Brussels. These efforts will culminate in the opening of a green bridge this summer.

Funding from the German brewery, which has already proved vital to rewilding work  carried out in the delta in 2017, will be used for ongoing river restoration and habitat improvement.

The camera will hopefully offer thrilling close-up views of a nesting vulture pair, giving watchers a better understanding of this majestic species and boosting conservation efforts.

The first gala of the German Postcode Lottery, held in Dusseldorf on 1 February, saw the Oder Delta rewilding team receive a grant for the restoration of the Stettiner Haff and Peene River, both important wetland areas in the German part of the Oder Delta rewilding area.

The results of the four-year study, which focused on the feeding behaviour of reintroduced European bison, Konik horses and Highland cattle in and around the Kraansvlak reserve in the Netherlands, have important implications for rewilding initiatives across Europe.
