One year of REC support brings excellent results for Guslice & Melnice honey

July 9, 2015  |  Blog

One year has passed since our family bee-keeping business, Guslice & Melnice honey, received a Rewilding Europe Capital (REC) loan. This loan was used to purchase new equipment, beekeeping containers, a device for collecting bee venom and for increasing our number of beehives. Continuing the family business with the support of Rewilding Europe turned out to be very important for us. We are both proud to be connected with this initiative and enthusiastic about the future and further development of our business.

When I heard that Rhodope Mountains have become the seventh Rewilding Europe’s area, the very first thought that crossed my mind was “Rhodopes cannot go any wilder”. I have always considered Rhodope Mountains as wildlife heaven due to the relatively small, even negligible human disturbance. Few months later as a Rewilding Europe volunteer, I set out on a journey to find out what can make the Rhodopes wilder than the wild place I last visited before.

Having read about Rewilding Europe and the rewilding areas in Europe, we wanted to learn more about them, see the challenges and successes, and get involved.  So we set off on a bike tour!

End of February is always quite exciting in the Western Iberia rewilding area. It is time to start counting all the calves and foals which are born since December. And every year, the update is even better than the year before: 12 new Garrano foals and 5 Maronesa calves were born this season.
