Rewilding Europe co-founder Wouter Helmer retired at the end of 2021. Over the last decade, his instrumental involvement with the initiative has given him pride, happy memories, and hope for the future.
Jan Derck van Karnebeek has been appointed as the new chairman of Rewilding Europe’s Supervisory Board. His extensive business experience will prove invaluable, particularly with upscaling, strategy and team building.

With an academic background in law and currently based in the UK, Sabine has focused on sustainability throughout her career, with 25 years’ professional experience in sustainability consulting across a broad range of sectors. We caught up with her to find out a little more about her background, her new role and her passion for rewilding and nature.
This spring proved to be a very interactive one for Rewilding Europe’s Oder Delta team.
Being one of two Regional Managers for Rewilding Europe, Deli is a key figure in making rewilding a reality in five areas stretching from Portugal all the way to Bulgaria on Europe’s eastern fringe. As the main point of liaison between the central office and local teams across the continent, it is his job to ensure that rewilding manifests itself as real action on the ground, and that local communities are going to be better off as a result.
When speaking to Alexandra about the rewilding of the Danube Delta region in her home country of Romania, it soon becomes clear that, to her, this is more than just an ecological debate. It is a grand vision of a more positive, collaborative, and mutually beneficial relationship between a land and its people. Instilling a sense of pride and ownership among those who rely on the Delta’s natural resources is Alexandra’s mission – and her biggest challenge.
