At Beaver Trust, our team of passionate and knowledgeable staff are on a mission to restore beavers to Britain in order to regenerate our landscapes. We are focused on the most impactful ways to deliver this and believe there are three fundamental elements that we need in place to succeed. Firstly, we need a healthy genetically diverse population of beavers. Secondly, we need national strategies that underpin and support beavers’ return. Thirdly we need co-existence, with people learning to live alongside beavers after centuries of absence. Our strategy underpins these, with three high-level goals of restoration, influencing and communicating, and all of our work addresses one or more of these aims. We are clear that, to succeed, we cannot and would not want to do this alone and that partnership working is critical to our success.

Project: Beaver Trust
Region: Britain
Keystone species: Beaver
Aim and vision: Beaver Trust's mission is to restore beavers to regenerate our landscapes. We translocate beavers to favourable sites; work to develop practical solutions that enable people and beavers to coexist; deliver science-led, engaging communications; and advocate for policies that enable the restoration of beavers, rivers and wetlands.
All of this supports our vision of thriving waterways vibrant with life, where beavers are embraced as a vital part of our biodiverse landscape.
Uniqueness of the project: We are the only charity in Britain who... Have expertise in trapping and relocating beavers across Britain, with our holding facilities at Five Sisters Zoo allowing us to undertake all required health screening. Are working in this way across all three countries of Britain. Have extensive experience working with wild AND enclosed beaver populations. Work with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from beaver advocates to those who seriously oppose their reintroduction to Britain.
Other activities: High-impact communications, Policy, Research
Results you aim to accomplish in 10 years from now on: Be on track to meet our goal of beavers living wild in 45% of Britain’s counties by 2045.
Build and maintain a high level of public support for wild living beavers in Britain.
Each government in Britain to have, and be implementing, a fit for purpose and ambitious national beaver strategy.
Inspirational value: At Beaver Trust, our restoration team includes some of Europe’s leading experts in beaver restoration and management. We have extensive fieldwork experience and implement effective beaver mitigation for a range of sites, stakeholders and issues, allowing us to disseminate techniques and share our experience. We fill knowledge gaps by undertaking research and designing and delivering training courses.
Experience you would like to share: At Beaver Trust our restoration team includes some of Europe’s leading experts in beaver restoration and management. We would be glad to share our experiences of beaver restoration, including projects that we have been involved in, and best practice for beaver translocation and release, in order to contribute our expertise to the wider network. We also have a strong track record of working with a broad spectrum of stakeholders — including government bodies, NGOs, the public, infrastructure developers, and land managers - from beaver advocates to those who seriously oppose their reintroduction. We therefore bring with us a range of contacts and diverse perspectives.
Experience you would like to gain: Networking and the opportunity to share knowledge, experience and information with other European countries involved in beaver restoration.
